Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a specialized form of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) that is primarily used to address severe male infertility. ICSI involves the direct injection of a single sperm into an egg to facilitate fertilization. This method significantly increases the chances of fertilization, especially in cases where sperm quality or quantity is compromised.
1. Ovarian Stimulation: Similar to conventional IVF, women undergo hormonal treatments to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
2. Egg Retrieval: Once the eggs are mature, they are collected from the ovaries using a fine needle under ultrasound guidance. This procedure is performed under sedation.
3. Sperm Collection and Preparation: A semen sample is collected from the male partner or a sperm donor. In cases of severe male infertility, sperm may be retrieved directly from the testicles using a surgical procedure known as testicular sperm extraction (TESE).
4. Sperm Injection: In the laboratory, a single sperm is carefully injected directly into the cytoplasm of each mature egg using a specialized microscope and fine instruments. This precise process is the core of the ICSI technique.
5. Fertilization and Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured in a controlled environment for several days until they reach the blastocyst stage.
6. Embryo Transfer: The healthiest embryos are selected and transferred into the woman's uterus using a thin catheter. This step is critical for achieving a successful pregnancy.
7. Luteal Phase Support: Hormonal medications are given to support the uterine lining and increase the chances of implantation.
8. Pregnancy Test: Approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is conducted to determine the success of the treatment.
